Peter D. Banko
President and Chief Executive Officer
Peter D. Banko is a seasoned health care leader with more than two decades of senior leadership experience. His commitment to Christian health care, and passion for people and culture support him in leading the $3.5 billion health system to meet the needs of the communities served in Colorado and western Kansas. Under his visionary leadership, Banko supports and inspires the organization’s deeply connected community of 21,000 caregivers who are on a mission to redefine health and health care, one whole human and one healthy neighborhood at a time.
Banko joined Centura Health as President and Chief Operating Officer in May 2016 following nine years in multiple leadership roles with one of Centura Health’s sponsors, Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI). At CHI, Banko played a pivotal role in integrating new partners into a system that currently spans 19 states and includes 105 hospitals and dozens of other facilities. He also served as market Chief Executive Officer for CHI St. Vincent in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he nearly tripled revenues and ushered in new models of care, including the country’s first health system partnership with Walmart.
Banko is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and Cornell University. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and the AHA/Health Forum Creating Healthier Communities Program. He and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Sedalia, Colo. and they have four children – Daniel, Lauren, Zachary, and Luke.
James Corbett, J.D., M.Div.
Senior Vice President and Chief Mission Officer
James Corbett is Senior Vice President and Chief Mission Officer at Centura Health, a multi-state integrated health system and the region’s largest health care provider serving Colorado and western Kansas. He is a fellow at Harvard Medical School, Division of Medical Ethics.
Corbett was appointed a four year term to the National Institutes of Health’s National Advisory Council for Nursing Research by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
Over the course of his career, he has worked in four different health systems providing strategic and operational leadership for community health, behavioral health, ethics, spiritual care, diversity, mission and global health, and his expertise helped support health care reform in Massachusetts. In these roles, he established innovative programs such as the community health advocates and behavioral health navigators to improve health care outcomes and reduce health care costs.
He has lectured at Harvard in Clinical Bioethics Courses and at the University of New England and Maine Schools of Law and has been published in numerous books and journals. Corbett received his B.S. in International Relations from Syracuse University, a Juris Doctor from St. Johns University and a Master of Divinity from Duke University.
Morre Dean, FACHE
President, South Denver Group and Chief Executive Officer, Porter Adventist Hospital
Morre Dean has been part of the Centura Health family since 2011 and was named president, South Denver Group and chief executive officer, Porter Adventist Hospital in March 2015. In addition to his chief executive officer responsibilities at Porter Adventist Hospital, Dean supports the ambulatory, acute and post-acute care strategies in South Denver and oversees the collaboration of the four South Denver Group hospitals (Castle Rock, Littleton, Parker and Porter Adventist Hospitals) to effectively share best practices and develop innovative health care solutions to optimize the value of health care.
Prior to this role, Dean served as the chief executive officer for Parker Adventist Hospital, where he oversaw completion of the $20.5 million Southlands Neighborhood Health Center in southeast Aurora and initiated master planning efforts, obtained capital approval and began construction on a $39 million phase one expansion of Parker Adventist Hospital.
Dean holds an MBA from the University of Central Florida and a bachelor's degree in business administration from Union College in Lincoln, Neb. He also is a certified public accountant.
Scott Ellner, DO
Group President of Physician Alignment
Scott Ellner, DO, serves as Group President for Physician Alignment at Centura Health, providing leadership to Centura Health Physician Group, Colorado Health Neighborhoods, and FullWell. Prior to serving in this role, Dr. Ellner served as the CEO of Centura Health Physician Group, supporting our multi-specialty group in providing whole-person care and building flourishing communities.
Dr. Ellner’s previous roles demonstrate his commitment to physicians, patients and hospitals, working together to meet the needs of the communities served. Prior to Centura Health, he helped Saint Francis Medical Group, a 400-provider multi-specialty practice in Connecticut, to grow and evolve amid the changing reimbursement and regulatory environment as its President and Vice Chairman, Surgical Service Line. As an educator, surgeon and public health leader, he has been responsible for many widely admired patient safety initiatives.
Dr. Ellner loves interacting with the public as well as with his fellow physicians and is an esteemed published author in 20-plus publications and 200-plus speaking engagements.
Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Dan Enderson has been serving as Centura Health senior vice president and chief financial officer since 2011. Previously he served as the CFO and senior vice president of Huguley Memorial Medical Center in Burleson, Texas, and the regional CFO for the Southwest Region of Adventist Health System, Inc., of Florida since July 2003. He has been with Adventist Health since 1992, where he has served as vice president of finance for the corporate office of Adventist Health System, Inc., and before that as the regional CFO for the Appalachian Region and Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher, North Carolina.
Enderson received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, and his master’s degree in business administration from Webster University in Orlando, Florida.
Brian Erling, MD, MBA
Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer
Dr. Brian Erling serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer for Centura Health. In his role, he is responsible for providing overall strategic direction and leadership for the establishment and sustained success of Centura Health in clinical excellence and optimal value to support building whole-person care and flourishing communities. Prior to this role, Brian served as Group Chief Medical Officer for the organization’s Mountains & North Denver hospitals. A highly experienced emergency medicine specialist, Dr. Erling has long been a leader in quality improvement and was recently appointed as a Baldrige Executive Fellow.
Prior to joining Centura Health, Dr. Erling served as president of the EmCare Alliance Group, a subsidiary of Envision Healthcare, a leading provider of multi-specialty physician and contract management services. He was also a founding partner of the Apex Emergency Group PC in Denver, and has served as the Denver medical director for American Medical Response, a subsidiary of Envision Healthcare and the largest international air and ground medical transport company.
Dr. Erling received his Bachelor of Science in biology from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa; his Medical Doctorate from John Hopkins University in Baltimore; and his Master of Business Administration from the University of Colorado in Denver. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Dr. Erling is board certified through the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
Thomas D. Gessel
Tom Gessel became Group President for Centura Health in October 2017 following a year of serving as Senior Vice President of Operations and Network Development for Centura Health and four years as President and Chief Executive Officer of Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango. He has also served as the executive sponsor of human resources for Centura Health.
In his current role, Gessel has direct reporting responsibility for Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango, Penrose-St. Francis Health Services in Colorado Springs, St. Catherine Hospital and Bob Wilson Memorial Grant Hospital in western Kansas, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo, and St. Thomas More Hospital in Cañon City. Gessel’s commitment to deliver whole-health care provides a critical foundation to grow and connect health services and resources in these markets and supports our mission-driven caregivers in building flourishing communities.
Prior to joining Centura Health, Gessel had extensive regional health system and network development experience in both urban and rural markets in Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Akron and a master’s degree in health administration from Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University. He is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Senior Vice President and Chief People Officer
Amy King serves as the senior vice president and chief people officer at Centura Health providing strategic leadership for human resource initiatives directly related to the Vision, Mission, goals and Values of Centura Health. Her work focuses on transforming human resources into a leading partner as Centura Health navigates its way through the changing health care environment.
King started her career in human resources in 1998 holding a variety of progressively responsible positions within the higher education HR administration industry. Now, she is responsible for articulating a vision for human resources that translates strategic priorities into operational imperatives and advancing the ongoing evolution of human resources to an integrated and strategic model at Centura Health.
King received a Bachelor of Science in organizational management with an emphasis in human resources from Colorado Christian University. Additionally, she earned a certificate of advanced study in alternative dispute resolution and a master’s degree in leadership and organizations with a specialty in human capacity in organizations from the University of Denver.
Cynthia R. Latney
Senior Vice President and Chief Transformation Officer
Cynthia R. Latney, PhD(c), MSN, RN, NE-BC, joined the Centura Health leadership in July 2017 as senior vice president and chief transformation officer. In this role, Cynthia serves as the chief nursing executive for nursing clinical practice, nursing care delivery and nursing strategic planning across the system and as the convener for nursing leadership in creating a culture that supports transformation and value. She also provides strategic direction and leadership in achieving sustained success in clinical excellence, optimal value and associate engagement.
Prior to her system position, Cynthia served as vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at Penrose-St. Francis Health Services and as vice president and chief nursing officer for South State Operating Group. She was instrumental in developing a culture of excellence throughout the organization that led to several achievements and awards, including the only Magnet-recognized hospital in southern Colorado for nursing excellence. Prior to joining Centura Health, Cynthia worked in chief nursing officer roles with HCA in Denver and Dallas, and in multiple diverse nursing leadership and nursing staff roles (largely in cardiovascular care and intensive care) with The Methodist Hospital in Houston.
Cynthia earned a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Buffalo, a master of science in nursing health care administration from the University of Phoenix, and is currently in the process of completing her doctor of philosophy degree in health care administration from Walden University. She is active in statewide and national nursing leadership organizations and local community organizations.
Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer
Ken Lee serves as the Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Centura Health providing strategic leadership for our use of technology across the system. Lee’s work focuses on driving growth, efficiency and disruption through aligned strategy, team development, technology, digitalization and consumer engagement.
Prior to joining Centura Health in October 2017, Lee served in chief information officer and chief IT architect roles in the public utility industry, leading technology focused business transformation at the New York Power Authority in White Plains, New York, Pacific Gas & Electric in San Francisco and Xcel Energy in Minneapolis. Prior to these roles, he founded and served as Chief Executive Officer at Bluewater Information Convergence, a venture capital funded technology services company based in Greenwich, Connecticut that worked across multiple industries and sectors. Lee’s understanding of entrepreneurship in technology differentiates Centura Health from other health systems in the industry.
Lee has a bachelor of science in computer engineering from Iowa State University. He and his wife live in Erie with their two children.
Janell M. Moerer
Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer
Janell Moerer, MBA, joined the Centura Health leadership team in October 2017 as Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. She is responsible for leading the Centura Health brand and fueling our connected community of caregivers to live out their missions. Prior to this role, Moerer served as the Group Vice President of Strategy and Business Development for one of the organization’s operating groups, where she played an instrumental role in growth and operational efficiencies.
Moerer brings more than 25 years of progressively responsible senior leadership experience in marketing, innovation and business development across the entire care continuum to Centura Health, serving in leadership roles at Via Christi Health (integrated health system), Nursing 2000 (home care and ambulatory care), Continental Medical Systems (post-acute and rehabilitation), Wheatland National Group Holdings (insurance brokerage) and Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center (acute care).
Moerer earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and her Master of Business Administration from Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. She is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, a board member of Innovation Leader Network and a member of Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce. Moerer and her husband Brent are the parents of two children.
Senior Vice President and General Counsel
Kris Ordelheide is responsible for managing and providing legal services and advice to Centura Health and its affiliated organizations. He has served as general counsel since 1996 and represented a variety of business and health care clients in private practice prior to joining Centura Health. The experience he brings to his role covers the broad scope of legal issues that arise in the health care and business setting, including governance, risk management, medical staff, patient care, employment, tax exemption, insurance, regulatory matters, real estate, and general business and commercial transactions.
Ordelheide received his bachelor’s degree from Walla Walla College and his juris doctor and master’s degree in business administration from the University of Denver.
Edward H. Sim
Group President of the Mountains & North Denver Operating Group and CEO of St. Anthony Hospital
Eddie Sim joined Centura Health as president, Mountains/North Denver Operating Group and CEO, St. Anthony Hospital in January, 2017. He is responsible for the six facilities within the group (Avista Adventist Hospital, St. Anthony Hospital, St. Anthony North Health Campus, St. Anthony Summit Medical Center, Longmont United Hospital and OrthoColorado Hospital) and also serves as CEO of St. Anthony Hospital, a 237-bed, Level One Trauma Center.
Prior to Centura Health, Sim served in progressively responsible senior leadership positions for 11 years at Baptist Health in Jacksonville, Fla. He served as the president of physician integration where he was responsible for an employed physician network of 380 physicians and a clinically integrated network with more than 900 physicians. He also served as a hospital president of a $360 million community hospital and vice president of operations of a $640 million tertiary care facility.
Sim earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Boston University, a Master of Science degree in pathology and laboratory medicine from Albany Medical College and a Master of Business Administration degree (with a concentration in health sector management) from Duke University. He has been active in his local chamber of commerce and economic development, United Way, breast cancer awareness and governance at his children’s school.
Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer
Dean Sanpei serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer and is responsible for leading the strategy and business development at Centura Health. Under his leadership, Sanpei is building sustaining, forward-thinking strategies to facilitate organizational growth and advance our efforts to build whole-person care and flourishing communities. He works tirelessly each day to most impactfully change communities and lives for the better.
Prior to joining Centura Health, he was the Vice President of Strategy for Intermountain Healthcare, an integrated health care delivery system with 22 hospitals headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he served in progressively responsible hospital and health system strategy roles for more than 17 years. He also served as an elected Representative in the Utah State Legislature and chaired executive appropriations in the House of Representatives where he was responsible for a $15.1 billion annual state budget. He also helped move Utah Medicaid toward more accountable care and population health initiatives as well as drove efforts to ensure the state remains among a small minority of states with AAA credit ratings.
Dean has a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from the University of Hawaii and a master of public administration degree from Brigham Young University. He has been consistently recognized for his political advocacy on behalf of public employees, people with disabilities, technology development, tax reform, and the business community. He is also active in child advocacy and international volunteer efforts.
